Home Security: D-Link Wi-Fi Cameras Reviewed (DCS-6500LH and DCS-6100LH) – Hardware

D-Link has made home Wi-Fi cameras attractive. How is the new batch?

We’ve been huge fans of D-Link Wi-Fi cameras since the DCS-8526LH first appeared. It was simple to set up, provided one year of free cloud download storage, had great picture quality, and was really useful. It was refreshing in a nutshell where cameras often come with all kinds of complex cabling systems, expensive cloud support, and clunky apps.

These two cameras are slightly different. The DCS-6500LH is a smaller, black version of the original 8526LH pan-and-tilt. Meanwhile, the DCS-6100LH is an even smaller camera on an adjustable stand that can be placed on a table or mounted on a wall. Both are easy to set up via the MyDlink app and the QR code in the box. The application offers to update the firmware and automatically configure three profiles: Home, Away or Standby. This turns the cameras off when you are at home and turns them back on at night or when you are away. You can configure these times manually if you wish.

At any time, you can see live what is happening on the premises and listen to what is happening. The swivel and tilt DCS-6500LH also features a speakerphone for two-way communication. In addition, it has a microSD card slot for local storage in addition to the Cloud storage that both have. The DCS-6500LH lens rotates in its body when in private mode, so there’s no doubt that it doesn’t register you. However, although there is a large horizontal pan of -170 / +170 degrees and a tilt of -40 / +50 degrees, the angle of view of the lens is a little less than that of the wide angle DCS- 8526LH from 135 degrees… to 100 degrees. The DCS-6100LH fixed position has a 110 degree field of view.

Both support Full HD video capture which offers color during the day and a 5m night view in the dark. Both offer impressive clarity.

The app allows you to configure notifications, including for a dedicated contact on your phone. We received a lot of notifications, mostly through our chats, but it was always nice to remember that the cameras were working. Whenever we were alerted, it was always a simple matter to watch the live view or check what the cloud save had recorded.

We’re a little disappointed that they both work on the aging 802.11g and n Wi-Fi bands, as that could slow down your network if you have an older router. However, we were impressed with the WPA3 security as no one wants their premises cameras to be hacked!

Both cameras work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant virtual assistants.

At $ 105, the DCS-6500LH pan-and-tilt is, frankly, a steal. The $ 84 DCS-6100LH is also a decent buy and will be best suited for those who don’t want pan-and-tilt complexities. Whichever you choose, these are great ways to protect and monitor your home, office, or other premises.
