Paris, France, March 17, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Home Design Institute (HDI) Paris, a leading education firm providing professional training in interior and landscape design, today announced the results of ‘a survey of nearly 250 participants about their feelings and perceptions after moving from a smaller house to a bigger one.
The data was made up of students who took a free interior design course at HDI and who indicated that they had moved to a larger primary residence within the past two years. Participants were asked a number of questions regarding their move. An overwhelming majority, 68%, said they felt happier after living in their largest home for six months, citing a variety of reasons including increased comfort (79%), more space for family members family (77%) and better relationships. between family members (44%). Less than a third of all respondents were less happy after living in a bigger house for six months; among these respondents, the most cited reason was having to pay larger bills (73%). The full answers were:
After 6 months, 32% of respondents felt less happy after moving to a bigger house, citing:
– Larger bills (73%)
– More homework (52%)
– Increased distance between family members (37%)
– Decreased sense of security at home (23%)
– Higher repair and maintenance costs (22%)
– Difficulties managing a larger property (18%)
After 6 months, 68% of respondents felt happier after moving to a bigger house, citing:
– More home comfort (79%)
– Availability of individual places for each member of the family (77%)
– The house has become cleaner (54%)
– Improved relationships between family members (44%)
– Opportunity to create a calmer and more individual workplace (38%)
“It was really fascinating to see the strong feelings of the people interviewed in this survey,” commented Ilian Petrov, founder of the Home Design Institute Paris. “We didn’t expect so many respondents to have the same answers, but it turned out that many participants were of the same opinion.”
Data indicates that people around the world are living with more space per person, and it is reasonable to think that the pandemic may have exacerbated this trend with the desire for larger spaces, as individuals and families spend more time at home. Another result of this extended time at home has been the skyrocketing demand for interior designers and home improvement contractors. Petrov said HDI’s free Interior Design Fundamentals course has become more popular than ever. The class is an introductory course designed for people looking to get started as freelance interior designers.

“Those TV house transformations that happened in an hour-long episode? People don’t realize I had a crew of 100 and it took us a week to do a house.
I speak with Mark Brunetz, the co-host of “Clean House,” a series that aired on the Style Network from 2003 to 2011.
“You mean it wasn’t real?” I am so gullible.
“I felt this disconnect between what was being shown and what was really happening that nobody was talking about,” he said, of the nine years he worked on the show. “The shows presented the beginning and the end, and slipped and glorified the middle. It compromised the design process, which has so much more depth.
He often thought, “Dude, if people only knew the story behind the story, this design is so much more than putting pretty things in a room and the emotional revelation crying out.”
And so last year, Brunetz launched Scandalabra, a podcast designed to find out just that, or as the cutline puts it: “The ugly truth behind beautiful spaces.”
Now I have known Mark for over a decade. He’s interviewed me before, and I don’t know what it is, but he has this way of making you say things that you would only say to your dog. So, unsurprisingly, when he asked his guests to share the real story, they flinched.
Since the first episode (titled “The Desecration of Design”) aired last July, he’s done 24 candid and unblinking podcast interviews with design insiders. Others are in preparation. Curious to discover everything he had learned, I grilled him. The following is a conversation about his conversations:
Marnie: Share some scoops! What have you learned?
Mark: In my first episode, I spoke with LA designer Jaime Rummerfield about our early days doing home makeovers for television. She nailed it when she said, as much good as makeover shows have done for the home improvement world, they’ve also done a disservice. The genre has devalued design and architecture. She compared the fast design featured on these shows with fast fashion. Many stores sell cheap clothes that look really cute on the hanger and fall apart after just one wear. It all depends on the moment. It also happens in the fast design world, pushing poorly made furniture to get that fast look. Oh, and every show has someone wielding a hammer knocking down a wall. That makes for a good TV, but knocking down a wall isn’t good for many homes.
Marnie: After 24 interviews with design pros, was there a theme?
Mark: Almost every guest said in one way or another that too many people are so busy copying trends that their homes don’t reflect them. People often believe that they have to define themselves by choosing and sticking to a style. They answer design quizzes and try to choose a style to emulate, but isn’t the real goal to create a space that looks like you?
Marnie: In your episode “The Dangers of TV Designer Idolatry,” your guest Angelo Surmelis warned against imitating the look of TV design experts or TV trends. Why?
Mark: Following either is a safe path to an inauthentic space. Companies manufacture trends to sell products. The only expert in your life is you, and there is only one you. Why would you copy someone else’s style? The color of the year is the color you love. You need to take the time to do your due diligence to find out who you are.
Marnie: When you spoke with famed architect Dean Larkin (whose residential work includes some of LA’s most iconic and expensive homes, including the restoration of Lionsgate, a 24,000 square foot Bel Air home rated at 65 million dollars), he said, “Ignore the ‘isms’. What did he mean?
Mark: Then again, when people lock themselves into one look, like mid-century modernism or traditionalism, they miss the opportunity to create their look. Your home is first and foremost your personal sanctuary and should resonate with you and your family.
And don’t rush. Certainly don’t attack a project like we did, finishing it in a week. The most successful rooms are designed over time. As for the idea of timeless design, Larkin sees it differently: we need to consider the times we live in and move forward. Good design is a connection between people, the space and the time in which they find themselves. It changes.
Marnie: How has the pandemic changed home design?
Mark: The pandemic has brought nothing new. He just put a magnifying glass on what was there. We started to look more at our environment and say to ourselves, I don’t like it. Why? If your house wasn’t really you, it became more obvious. Now, those who thrive at home are those who connect with their home because their home reflects them.
Marnie: How do you put the “you” in your space?
Mark: Early on, I learned that people don’t feel comfortable talking about design, but they have no problem talking about themselves. So I get them to talk about what they like to do, where they like to travel, what clothes in their wardrobe make them feel most like themselves. I ask, if you were a piece of furniture, what would you be? If they say a chair, I ask what is it made of? Wood or metal? Is it new or old? Is it upholstered? Is the fabric patterned or plain? Everyone has a style.
Marnie: So, if you were a piece of furniture, what would you be?
Mark: A huge 17th century wooden cabinet full of beautiful and interesting collectibles surprises and reveals. And you?
Marnie: I would be a kitchen table, the center of all the gossip.

The global pandemic has tested the resilience of businesses, affecting everything from how employees worked to how they reached customers. For many businesses, their customers have moved online in droves. Since March 2020, online shopping and e-commerce activity has exploded, even in industries where consumers have traditionally preferred to browse in person before buying. Buying a home and interior decorating were no exception. A recent Prosper Insights & Analytics survey found that consumer plans for buying a home have increased year over year.
Prosper – Planned major purchases
Thrive Insights & Analytics
As people spent more time at home or bought new homes, the desire to refresh living spaces increased. To meet this growing demand, furniture manufacturers and design companies have restructured their supply chains and large-scale operations. For Modsy, a leading online interior design service, the pandemic has prompted the company to make critical adjustments. I had the chance to sit down with Modsy CEO and co-founder Shanna Tellerman to learn more about how the company has adjusted its strategy to meet growing customer demand.
Gary Drenik: Tell me about your background and why did you start Modsy?
Shanna Tellerman: I have always been passionate about the intersection of design and technology. I founded my first 3D technology company, Sim Ops Studios, after finishing graduate school at Carnegie Mellon University. At Sim Ops, we launched a cloud-based 3D gaming platform called Wild Pockets and were eventually acquired by Autodesk. I stayed at Autodesk for over two years as a Product Line Manager to help launch Autodesk Cloud before moving to Google Ventures. While working at GV, my husband and I moved into a new apartment, and it was during this move that I realized that designing a house and buying furniture was difficult. I couldn’t imagine what everything I saw online in my space would look like, and I didn’t have the design skills to put it all together. After polling others, I quickly realized this was a common problem in need of a modern solution, and started Modsy with a vision of combining affordable design services with world-class 3D technology. to change the way we shop for the home.
Drenik: According to a recent Prosper Insights & Analytics survey, more than half (54%) of consumers surveyed said they would rather work for a company that allows them to work from home than in the office, an increase from 42%. Last year. The transition to remote work has been huge. How has this impacted the growth of the online design industry?
Prosper – Prefers to work from home
Thrive Insights & Analytics
Cashier: When people were forced to spend more time at home in early 2020, many realized their spaces needed a refresh and the way they would use their homes had changed. With a new, more flexible work environment, people are moving into bigger homes, renovating their existing homes, and/or repurposing their existing rooms for new purposes. The pandemic has accelerated many changes that were already underway, such as online shopping, virtual services, and a more flexible work environment, all of which have benefited the interior decorating and interior design industries.
Modsy sits at the intersection of all of these trends, as the company was created to provide our clients with access to professional design assistance virtually without the price of traditional interior design. Modsy has grown tremendously over the past few years before and after the pandemic and yet there are still so many opportunities ahead as we have barely scratched the surface of the addressable market for designer services and a more personalized shopping experience. for the House.
Drenik: Given the growing customer demand for online home design, how can companies meet this demand and scale for continued growth?
Cashier: At the start of the pandemic in 2020, we decided to counter anxiety about the future by investing in fundamental business infrastructure, specifically a new financial management system. We thought that if a recession happened, we would want to be in a stronger position on the other side. What we didn’t expect was that the recession never happened and the demand for our services skyrocketed. With our Oracle NetSuite cloud ERP in place, we focused on establishing a flexible and scalable foundation for continued growth today and into the future.
Although the business may seem simple at first glance, it is complex behind the scenes. We are a software developer, professional interior design service and online e-commerce marketplace all in one. We even make our own line of furniture. With NetSuite, we get data-driven insights into the most complex parts of our business and automate manual tasks. Investing in technology has been and will continue to be a competitive advantage at Modsy.
Drenik: What challenges do online design companies face and how have you overcome them?
Cashier: The supply chain and associated disruptions continue to be a major challenge for any consumer goods company. Modsy has a data-obsessed culture and that has helped us alleviate some of these challenges. Leveraging data around which vendors and SKUs are most frequently impacted by shipping delays will help us better route demand to vendors and SKUs that are shipping fastest. This visibility also helps improve the customer experience, as we can optimize our recommendations for products that will ship faster. Having a single source of truth for data across the entire organization – including supply chain, inventory, and finance – becomes increasingly critical as our business grows in size and complexity. During unpredictable times, we are always on the lookout for data that helps us make the best possible decisions for our customers and our business.
Drenik: Many businesses started online and later opened physical stores. How do you see the online design category evolving? Will more businesses start expanding to physical locations?
Cashier: We have been and always will be driven by the needs of our customers. At this time, we have no plans for in-person stores as our clients have clearly told us that they appreciate the online and virtual nature of our design services. The main thing customers expect to experience in person is an item’s comfort level and/or material feel, but these can be easily resolved through detailed reviews and samples that are shipped to your residence. While I think there may be physical manifestations of the design in the future, I think it will always come in support of an inline first model.
Drenik: Thank you Shanna, for your insights into the online interior design industry and your discussion of how Modsy has embraced technology to support its continued growth. It was great to learn more about the company.

LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) – If you build it, they will come. Well, that’s what the East Texas Builders Association has been hoping for since they kind of built their annual home and design show at Maude Cobb in Longview this weekend.
If you’re looking for the latest products for a home renovation or construction, the Home and Design Show is a bit like going shopping in a mall. Mike Maloy with Phillips Flooring Center can put 3D into walls and really make them stand out.
“It’s called Vertical Illusions, and it’s laminated styrofoam. It comes in many shapes and sizes. You see you have many ways to install with templates,” Maloy said.
Bob Jameson of Stone Works said quartz is all the rage.
“The white colors, especially. It goes in every color from A to Z, but whites are all the rage right now. And Cambria and the other manufacturers are leading the way,” Jameson said.
Dave Hernandez of Gill Electric installs the latest generators because people need to have their backup and they’re smarter.
“The Generac has an app, and you can communicate through the app with the generator and see some of the diagnostics in there and see that some of the maintenance is being done. Some owners like to see that,” Hernandez said.
Luke Hicks with Fidelity Metalworks can get you heavy metal or light metal.
“We tailor everything; we do plasma cutting. We make doors, handrails, front doorways,” Hicks said.
Joe Simmons with Clean Cut Roofing has, well, roof stuff.
“What’s up? It’s just a bunch of shingles, right?” I say to Joe.
“Yeah, yeah, it’s just a bunch of really expensive futuristic shingles. That’s what we have here. What we have is the Tesla Solar Roof. We’re one of 56 contractors in the United States. United who are authorized to install this shingle,” Simmons said.
He says the shingle is the solar panel, and they also sell the Power Wall filled with batteries.
And if that remodel includes plumbing work, there’s even a pink porta-potty specially designed for the woman in the house or outbuilding.
The Salon Maison et Design takes place on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
It’s $7 to get in.

MINNEAPOLIS — Revience Corp. acquired Vetsch Custom Cabinetry, both in Albertville, Mn.
For over 40 years, Vetsch Custom Cabinetry has operated in Minnesota with Dave Vetsch at the helm.
“As I prepared to retire, I wanted Vetsch Custom Cabinets to be in the hands of a strategic new owner who would retain the know-how while engaging with market trends, which ultimately account, would grow the business,” he said.
Vetsch’s wish was granted when the company was acquired by Revience, which will offer the same beautiful cabinetry along with full home design and integration services. Vesch said.
Revience brings together smart home technology, space and energy management, lighting and cabinetry to adapt a home to a family’s lifestyle. Going forward, the company will acquire other assets and invest in developments as it seeks to create a portfolio of businesses that provide a more personalized home experience.
“Our goal is to reinvent traditional industries with innovative solutions,” said Kurt Gonyea, president of Revience. “As people spend time at home, they are looking for more responsive, practical and fashionable wardrobe options, versatile pieces and smart, energy-efficient homes. We are here to meet that need. .”
The acquisitions position Revience as a multifunctional solution for homeowners, general contractors, architects and designers who prefer to partner with a central supplier rather than sourcing from a multitude of options.
“We develop products and acquire businesses to help homeowners create a custom space to match their lifestyle and be that one-stop-shop for trades as they design, build and renovate homes,” Gonyea added.
This new approach allows for increased modernization and customization of home design, making day-to-day home activities easier, as well as a beautiful, streamlined aesthetic.

As long-term or permanent work from home becomes common practice for many people, the concept of “work-life integration” is replacing “work-life balance,” according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce . How has the nearly two years of the pandemic changed what people look for in a home, interior design trends, and how people approach their unique home office space?
Perfect Paint owner and interior designer Jaci Springfield said she’s seen ‘literally everything’ so far, from people who have gleaned enough space in a bedroom for an attached home office, to parents who created “walls” from curtains hung from the ceiling. a nursery to define a partially isolated work space.
Going into people’s homes for paint consultations gave Springfield a chance to see “what people have been tinkering with, like desks stuck in a laundry room” and it was their frustration that scarred her.
“Everyone thought it would be temporary and then it became ‘I’ve been stuck in my house and I can’t take it. You have to help me do something’ as people got frustrated.
“A curtain is an act of desperation, the need for a quiet space,” Springfield said, with home office space less about square footage and more about having enough electrical outlets. , a comfortable ergonomic workstation and the ability to close the world.
Those who had the money, time, and ability made changes to their homes that they might not have prioritized without working from home.
La Mesa-based architect Kent Coston observed that there were “more thoughts of being self-sufficient at home” during the early months of the pandemic, with many people adding options like outdoor patios that would allow for entertaining at home alongside garden projects to spruce up their outdoor space.
Well over a year later, he observed, some business owners in high demand during the pandemic, such as contractors who work with ventilation systems, have seen their bank accounts increase.
“The unintended consequence of all of this is that it has unwittingly triggered some engines of the economy and some customers can finally take the plunge into building a home. For all the people who have been challenged, many are now able to do more financially,” Coston said.
Additionally, their approach is “a bit more conscientious about how they use their home, who’s there, how they use their space” with the option to work from home.
On the other hand, “if things are tight and you’re trying to get by without extra income, chances are you won’t call me to get involved,” Coston said, because at some moment, building or renovating a house becomes a luxury that not everyone can afford.
Those who cannot afford to build, buy or renovate their own home have sought specific amenities in rentals.
Susan Schwartz of Utopia Property Management said bonus rooms, previously overlooked in house rentals, are now a sought after commodity as they can be used for a home office.
“Apartment renters are a bit more ephemeral, so they think about places with space in mind. What can they do with it? Is there room for a dog? Everyone adopted a dog,” Schwartz said.
Renters have stayed put for most of the pandemic, she said, many afraid to move, some with lower credit scores after job loss and others with less disposable income.
The 2019 United States Census shows that approximately 53% of San Diego County residents rent their homes and approximately 84% have been in the same location for over a year.
“As property managers, we’ve been very accommodating, but the laws have changed and at this point a lot of landlords are selling because they’ve become frustrated with the rent situation,” Schwartz said, the unable landlords or refusing to maintain a mortgage without equal income from incoming rent to cover those monthly payments.
However, a home fresh on the market this week might look very different from the same property in 2019.
Creative Designs COO Jessica Roberts says the whole landscape of home staging, the art of preparing a home for the market, has changed.
When they offer painting consultations these days, “it’s white, bright, clean light for a positive home experience” and clients are asked to stay neutral to suggest a sense of calm during stressful times. , like life during a pandemic.
In general, she observed that there are more buyers from San Francisco on the coast who want to escape Silicon Valley prices for relatively more affordable homes in San Diego, but the trade-off is that they will telework for work.
“Every time we stage now, we’re building in a home workplace or an office. This has been our standard since the start of the pandemic,” Roberts said. This approach extends to the whole family, and “every child’s bedroom has a desk, a place to work,” Roberts said.
Realtor Cristina Munteanu, who deals in single-family properties as well as multi-unit developments across the county, said buyers are specifically looking for home office space and a home gym, but are ready. to sacrifice kitchen space in return, but want the kitchen to be up to date and efficient.
“They are still working from home. They order a lot but want updated appliances and a nicer kitchen space when eating at home,” Munteneau said.
The pandemic brought a new level of caution against germs which, two years later, entered the domestic market.
“Other things shoppers want are newer toilets and no carpets, nothing that can trap dirt or germs. Are they more aware of germs and flushing? Everybody wants a toilet Kohler,” Munteneau said, with technology that claims to kill germs more effectively.
Space, she said, is everything – nearby amenities no longer matter as much to her buyers as if there’s enough room for their family’s lifestyle at home.
“They used to want to live near a Starbucks and now they just want a space like a detached accessory living unit for work space. Many people who had to work from home at the start of the pandemic now want to continue to do so. Having your own office is great, as is having more space for the kids to play at home,” Munteneau said.
One World Architecture’s lead architect, Ken Parel-Sewell, also said more owners are adding secondary suites to existing properties since the pandemic began.
“The pandemic has increased the demand for secondary suites. The common reasons customers build ADUs have only been accelerated by the pandemic. Whether it’s to house older relatives or other family members or to create rental income, the trend to build these units has grown steadily,” Parel-Sewell said.
Indeed, her observations mirror what Springfield observed in interior design and what Roberts now incorporates when she stages a home: everyone needs a place to work.
“We’re working on projects all over the country and this trend isn’t just in San Diego County, it’s everywhere. I have been a licensed architect for 25 years now. Over the past two years, home offices or workspaces have moved from the occasional demand for a desk in the corner of the kitchen or family room to dedicated desks with doors. This has prompted many clients to convert bedrooms into offices and expand their homes for more bedrooms,” Parel-Sewell said, and those who cannot afford to build new bedrooms have reallocated other space for quiet work and school areas.
With families spending more time together, Parel-Sewell said, the ideal space isn’t the same for everyone: Introverts need spaces to recharge on their own, and extroverts want to feel connected to others.
Not everyone has the budget for major home improvements, but after nearly two years of lifestyle changes, Parel-Sewell observed that “funds budgeted for traveling vacations are reallocated to renovations and home addition” and many of their clients decided to move forward with improvements they had been putting off, investing in their home space instead of spending time away from home.
Springfield also observes that people have completely changed their lifestyles as the months of working from home increase and offices close permanently. She believes this year’s office vacancies could be tomorrow’s affordable housing.
“Think about it, most people don’t need to drive 20 miles to work on things they can do at home with just a few work tools. My dream is to have us take some of these house projects and design a common space with a printer and office equipment, a sort of community office hub,” Springfield said.
The concept isn’t all that different from building an ADU in the backyard, finding a house with extra space, or even dividing a kid’s room with a curtain. to create a home office. These solutions all answer the question of how nearly two years of the pandemic have changed what people are looking for in home design and decorating: they are looking for peace, comfort, and a way to carve out their own space.
