Make your porch a bonus room

There’s no denying that Wendy and Evan’s house is running out of space, and there isn’t much that Soto and Pennington can do to make the living room bigger. So these two decide to expand the living space, right in front of the front door!

Pennington decides to make the porch an extra room by modernizing the floor to make it a bit more elegant and adding a daybed for comfortable seating.

“Making it another living space would be key,” Soto says when Pennington describes his plan.

Fortunately, the furniture and the floor make this porch feel like a real living room. This reimagined porch proves that outdoor space can be incredibly valuable for a small home.

Choosing a door color is one of the toughest design decisions

As part of the porch rehabilitation, Soto and Pennington want to install a new front door, which means they will have to choose a paint color that will suit the 1920s exterior of this house.

“One of the hardest things to decide about the exterior of your home is the exterior color of your front door,” says Pennington. “There are only certain colors that really work with brick.”

Soto and Pennington both love a blue undertone and a green undertone, with Pennington pointing out that they are both toned down enough to be good front door colors. But in the end, they choose green. This color pairs perfectly with the exterior brickwork and complements all the beautiful greenery that Soto and Pennington add to the porch.

Create a space-saving, folding desk

Nowadays, a lot of people work from home and Wendy is no exception. When she first meets Pennington, she explains that she works from her small kitchen table, which seems cramped.

Pennington therefore creates a compact desk in the living room, by constructing a window shelf that folds out into a table. Pennington points out that it will be a great office space, with a great view. Plus, it’ll be a handy shelf when Wendy isn’t working.

“It’s like a little hidden office nook,” Soto says.

To complete the office space, Pennington adds a bench with a hidden compartment. He points out that when Wendy is done with her work, she can put her work stuff away on the workbench.

Ultimately, it’s a brilliant home office that pops up (and goes) based on how space is used at that time.

Use dark flooring to offset an all-white kitchen

Wendy tells Pennington that she really wants an all-white kitchen, but Pennington knows the space will need some color, even if it’s not the quartz countertops or cabinetry. So he decides to bring a dark wooden floor.

“Dark flooring would look really good with a white-white kitchen,” says Pennington, “because you’ll get a nice, strong contrast.”

The kitchen ends up looking great. The space is filled with all-white materials, just like Wendy intended, but the dark floors keep it from looking washed out. The space ends up looking bright and well balanced.

Bring the kitchen to life with a mini greenhouse

When the kitchen is almost done, Soto comes up with the idea of ​​adding a small shelf to the window above the sink. She thinks a clear glass shelf will fill the space nicely and provide additional storage space.

“The other good news about a clear glass shelf is that light travels all the way,” says Pennington, “so you might have [a] double herb garden.

They finish this kitchen by adding little plants to this window. Greenery looks great in the all-white kitchen, and the mini herb garden will come in handy for cooking with fresh herbs.
