Worthy home design competition: open call

GRAND PRIZE: $ 1,000

Short
The concept of Home means something different around the world. In some places it is an apartment in a high tower and in others it is a stucco building by the side of a small road. Whichever option best describes your life, a home should be a worthy place that meets your needs and supports your future.

The question becomes, why are so few households doing this? Especially in developing communities around the world. How can design be a light for a better life?

At DesignClass, we are passionate about exploring how design can positively impact people’s lives. We don’t think a home has to be fancy or grand, but it should be safe, uplifting, and useful.

It’s your challenge, design a sustainable and dignified home for families in developing communities around the world.

The house should use local materials, adapt to the local environment, be sized appropriately for families in that community, and should have an economic space where the family can run a small store or business.

We see this competition as an opportunity to broaden your mindset and explore how people in a different context can live, work and thrive. Your house can be any size and made of any material. All we ask is that you do your best to understand the context of the community.

Design guidelines

1. Choose a community for which you want to design a house. We suggest that you examine areas near you with severe economic development needs that could benefit from intentional design.
2. Study how people live in this community and how your home could improve their lives.
3. Design a home that fits into the context, provides living space for the family, and has a dedicated economic space where the family can operate a small store or business.
