Wyze CamPlus Pro Review | Best Home Security Systems 2022
At least 64 percent of American homes do not have a home security system. Some people cite cost as a reason for not getting one, while others say sensor setup and design are barriers to entry. Wyze has just solved these two major problems with its CamPlus Pro subscription. This new AI-based security service costs just $3.99 per month with no contract requirements and works with its existing range of affordable compact cameras, including the Wyze Cam V2, V3and Stove (at an average device price of just $35). That means for $40 all-inclusive, you can turn an affordable Wyze camera into a complete home surveillance system, security camera, and motion sensor without the need for a hub or sensors.
All-in-one The home security device in this price range is a tall order that we wanted to put to the test to make sure it works as advertised. And the CamPlus Pro performed well in our testing with no lags or hitches. You can arm and disarm the system remotely to detect movement, whether you’re at home or across the country. If something or someone moves where it shouldn’t be, the camera sends a video clip to you and a professional Noonlight security guard within seconds. If you confirm that this entry is not an accident, Noonlight will immediately dispatch emergency services to your home. The less than $4 per month service is a fraction of the $40 per month charged by Slomin or ADT, and unlike those services, you can subscribe and unsubscribe on a monthly basis. Unfortunately, you have to pay per camera right now, so if you want to cover your front door, side door, and back doors, it would cost $4 per camera for a total of $12 per month.
Compact and affordable home security
Traditionally, you would need multiple layers of gear for this level of protection. While you can arm your property to the teeth with sensors, cameras, and sirens (which add up quickly), CamPlus Pro takes some of that stress off your wallet and your router bandwidth. In fact, I downsized multiple door sensors, motion detectors, and a home security center spread throughout my apartment to a single 2-inch camera pointed at the main entrance to relay information from state. Now live video accompanies notifications when cameras detect movement or the front door is open. Previously I would see the door sensor telling me that an entrance was open, then a few seconds later a motion sensor would go off, and finally after that a panoramic camera would send me a clip that needed a few seconds to process . Wyze Cams paired with CamPlus Pro cuts all the fat from these devices. I now get a live preview of the action as it unfolds instead of watching play-by-play later.
This CamPlus Pro service combined with one of the Wyze cameras is only a quarter of the price of the 5-piece home surveillance kits of Ring or even wyze himself. Like these systems, you can arm or disarm it remotely via the Internet. Signing up for the service was simple, but if you actively use Wyze’s sensor-based home monitoring system, you can’t run it in conjunction with the CamPlus Pro. This effectively rendered the remaining three months of my previous subscription useless.
But once my camera is connected. I added my name, phone number, PIN, and security word.
AI-powered smart features accurately identify activities, people and objects
In addition to streamlining your gear and notifying authorities, the CamPlus Pro subscription offers unlimited full-featured video recording, object identification like pets or packages, and even sound-triggered alerts. Chief among the newer features is Friendly Faces, which uses recordings to tag and recognize the faces of family and friends.
Not only did the AI accurately recognize things like packages, cars, and pets during testing, but it can see people you’ve tagged in the app using saved images (tagging them as a contact) so she can identify who is on camera. In practice, this means app notifications and smart home assistant announcements now accurately identify friends and family who have entered the camera view. Wyze says that in the future, this will allow some people to walk into an armed house without setting off an alarm. During testing, it picked up on me and my fiancee as we hauled groceries, brought packages, or just walked through the door, sending notifications to my phone in an average of seven seconds.
The Wyze app itself is smart and platform independent. I set it up with Alexa and Google Assistant and created rules to automate tasks. For example, when I walk through the door with my phone, a location-based trigger activates my smart lock and automatically arms my security system. As I walk into my apartment and walk through that GPS fence with my phone, the door unlocks and disarms the system automatically.
Fast professional monitoring increases emergency response times
Noonlight’s 24/7 home monitoring is included in the subscription. You can just pay $3.99 for a month of this external monitoring service and then pay no subscription fees at all for months when you just want to keep an eye on the cameras yourself. For example, you can spit for professional supervision for a month when you go on an extended vacation. So if you miss notifications on your phone, an agent can make the call to send someone to your house. This service connects your Wyze Cam directly to live agents; if you don’t use it and miss a burglary, no one will make that call for you. Noonlight does not have access to live images. Instead, a temporary clip is sent to make sure everything is okay and expires shortly after an event ends.
During testing, the response time between triggering the alarm and receiving an SMS from the security call center averaged 15 seconds. It’s very fast in an emergency, especially compared to the Ring Alarm, which was often three times slower. (I tested the response times at 8am, 5pm and 11pm to get an accurate idea of how long it took for the monitoring service to reach out after triggering the alarm at different times of the day .) You can use your PIN in the Wyze app to cancel the alarm, but don’t or don’t reply to the text and you’ll get a call. If you miss this call, the police will automatically be dispatched to your home.
Pop-up notifications are even faster. After triggering the alarm, I received one on my phone in an average of seven seconds (over Wi-Fi and 5G). Opening the app from this notification allows me to see at a glance what triggered the camera and easily act on that information. While Wyze’s past machine learning efforts focused on identifying objects like packages and vehicles, the new CamPlus Pro AI training algorithm is hyper-focused on human shapes and appearances. This makes calls more accurate in finding a person’s outline in any day or night environment and reduces false alarms. I randomly stacked boxes along the wall of my entryway waiting for them to fall. And when they did, the camera recognized it was just packets.
Wyze Cam V3 paired with CamPlus Pro offers the most value
Wyze Cam V3 is the most complete option in the range. It’s rated IP65 to withstand the elements, includes a fairly loud built-in siren that’s effective indoors, and provides clear night vision with its built-in Starlight camera sensor. You can even buy it additional projector to illuminate a dark or outdoor space (this is not compatible with either of the other two models). Without CamPlus Pro, this little camera is still great for self-monitoring your property but not alerting the police. 1080p quality is clear but fails to distinguish fine details like a tattoo. The wording on the clothing, however, looks sharp.
My only issue with this system is the lack of backup for cell service or battery – turn off the power to the camera and/or router and it becomes useless. In the event of a disaster, a configuration of Ring or SimpliSafe at least has built-in cell service and power reserves. To ease this worry, you can get two separate power storage backups, one for the camera and one for the modem and router. But this option is not cheap and takes both space and energy. It will be interesting to see if Wyze fixes this in a Wyze Cam V4, as I’d be happy to pay more for the safety net. As it stands, the system is a safe bet, especially if you currently lack home security or are using an older system.
